Beyonce will remove offensive lyrics from her new album
Beyonce’s new album Renaissance received much praise, but some fans were furious that she used an ableist term in one track.
Heated, the 11th track, featured the lyrics: “Spazzin’ on that a*s spazz on that as*.”
Spazz is a slang term that was born from the word “spastic”. It refers to a disability where it is difficult to control muscles, particularly in the limbs.
Beyonce’s team stated to Variety, following the backlash from social media, that the lyrics would be changed.
Her team said that “the word will not be used intentionally in an adverse way”
Beyonce is the second artist to take this decision in this year’s music. Lizzo, a well-known rapper, was also criticised in June for using the same term in Grrls.
Renaissance is Beyonce’s seventh solo studio album. It was released Friday.
It is expected that the 16-tracked track will be a top chart hit due to the buzz it generated over the weekend.
